The Starting Point team discusses NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg "Latch on NYC" plan, which advises hospitals to hide baby formula from new moms to encourage breastfeeding.
Breast feeding can be a difficult thing to master. Some babies do not latch on, some women are extremely uncomfortable with breast feeding. AND if you're going to force women to breast feed then you need to force businesses to allow women to bring their babies to work where they can breast feed. It is healthier to breast feed, but at the same time it's outrageous to force a woman who may have gone through HOURS of labor and may be exhausted to struggle with something that should be easy.
I think most educated people know the advantages of breast feeding over formula.
The best approach is through education and not forcing the issue through a ban. When you try to force people they tend to push back and rebel.
The food and drug industries have been controlling people's lives for years. Trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup, prescription drug advertising are all used to make money. Who in their right mind would drink a 28 oz soda with their double cheese burger and biggie fries? It is only after years of marketing that people think this is normal behavior. Someone needs to stand up to the advertising of unhealthy products and practices.
I am a 65 year old woman and I have never witnessed such an obsession with control of a woman's body by everyone from local government officials to members of Congress, all, or most of whom, are males. Now the NY Mayor wants to control breast feeding by women? What I get out of all of this is that the male population thinks women are just too stupid to think for themselves or their children and that men are outraged that the one frontier they cannot conquor is the woman's right to make her own reproductive decisions. Maybe it's all a dream and this really is 1950.
The NYC needs to wake up and realize what a fascist dictator is in their mayors office. He has such an elitist arrogance persona. New mothers often haven't started producing enough milk to adequately feed a newborn, especially C-section mothers. Breast milk is the best thing for a newborn, but that is a decision that is the right of the parents not the government. Enough with the over reaching government.
If a woman is pressured to breastfeed, they won't produce any milk. They have got to want to breastfeed their baby. If he wants to get the message out there, show the facts & benefits of breastfeeding. What is going on with the Mayor anyhow, is he on a control streak? Aside from this, he wants to ban large servings of soda. He's crossing the boundaries by trying to control people's lives. I am disappointed in his behavior lately. People must make their own decisions, it's their life. What are they going to do for the anorexic? Force feed them with tubes?
I do understand what you are saying but I feel he is doing the right thing and I like how he is looking after our health the future generations. There are plenty of studies that has shown the benefits of breastfeeding over the years. This video did not mention the facts on how beneficial it is for the baby. I totally agree with the woman in the video "they should teach how to breastfeed". It should be mandatory to properly teach mothers everything from breastfeeding, babycare and how to propery raise children. Education is key. I also feel soda should be banned completely. It is extremely unhealthy for people. I have read article after article how aweful soda is for people. There is no way I am drinking soda again unless it is an emergency. I don't like how the government allows to sell processed foods to the people. There is an increase number of health issues.
