Meat clerk 'hero' suspended from Safeway for breaking up a domestic assault

Ryan Young, a meat clerk at the Safeway in Del Rey Oaks, California, has been indefinitely suspended without pay from his job. But many agree he wasn't doing anything wrong: Young stepped in to stop an altercation between a couple when he noticed Quyen Van Tran abusing his pregnant girlfriend in the store.

Young was commended by the Del Rey Oaks chief of police and told that, were it not for his actions, things could have been much worse. Van Tran was arrested after the incident. However, Young was notified by his manager that he would be placed on leave from his job until further notice for what Safeway described to CNN as "legal reasons."

Young says that he and his wife are expecting their first child in October and this employment situation has created some unneeded stress for his family. Still, he doesn't regret his actions.

"If my wife or my sister was in the same situation, I would just hope that someone would step in and come to their aid as well," Young says.

Newark Mayor Booker describes fire rescue, says there was a 'touch and go' moment when he thought he wouldn't survive

Many are calling him a hero mayor this morning. Newark Mayor Cory Booker saved the life of a woman trapped in her burning home last night.

Booker says he came home to find his neighbor's house in flames, raced inside, snatched the woman out of her bed and carried her out to safety. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but he's doing okay this morning.

Mayor Booker talks with Soledad live by phone this morning on "Starting Point" and describes the harrowing moment when he saw the house on fire.

"I ran up to the top of the steps with my security detail behind me," Booker says. "Something exploded and sent a lot of flames and my detail grabbed me and tried to drag me out of there. We got into a bit of an altercation. I was able to convince them to let go of me and just jumped into the kitchen which was on fire and was able to make my way through there to a back bedroom where the woman was hiding and it was a touch and go moment. I was able to grab her and get back through the kitchen. That's when she sustained some burns and I got some minor burns and got her out of the house."

After such a harrowing experience, Booker says he thinks he is now 'more religious' because of the experience.

"When I got through the fiery kitchen, the room I came into was just full of smoke. I couldn't find the woman. I looked back behind me and the kitchen was becoming more and more of an inferno. At that point I thought to myself this is it. Fortunately she called out for me. I was able to feel my way and find her. And then just made the choice. I said we have to go back through that kitchen and was able to carry her that back through. She didn't have much clothes on. Her back got burned up. My hand holding her got burned."
