Rep. Brown on why she's suggesting 'hate crime' charges in Trayvon shooting, says Zimmerman should have gun permit revoked

There's growing outrage over the shooting death of an unarmed black teen in Florida.

The U.S. Justice Department is now investigating what happened the night Trayvon Martin was killed.

NAACP president Ben Jealous says the call to action on Facebook, Twitter and the rallies through the streets shows the power of the people to make sure justice is heard for Trayvon.

Martin was shot to death by George Zimmerman in the Florida district of Representative Corrine Brown. She is asking the Justice Department to consider Martin's death as a "hate crime," and says failing to investigate the shooting leads people to think that the justice system isn't fair.

Brown talks with Soledad this morning on "Starting Point" about the investigation. In her interview, Brown says the state should review the "Stand Your Ground" law, which some say is the reason Zimmerman wasn't charged in the first place. The law states a person has the right to meet force with force, including deadly force.

"America is better than this," Brown tells Soledad. "We are better people than this. And we have to take this as a teaching moment and figure out what we can do to correct this. There's something wrong with this picture."

Read Rep. Brown's letter to Attorney General Eric Holder on the Trayvon Martin investigation.
Press release from Rep. Brown's office stating that she will suggest hate crime charges be filed in the Martin shooting.

The failure to arrest this murderer is suttle bait by the Police to instigate violence. Please people., resist the temptation and remain calm. There is no justification for the refusal to arrest Zimmerman.

so lets assume that there was some altercation between the child and the adult. the point is zimmerman was told by the operator once he called for the police to NOT pursue the boy! he pursued the child confronted him with a gun. he had no badge, no authority over this young man. if it was a police officer then this would be a different case. how would you feel if your simply walking around in your neighborhood to be confronted by someone questioning what you are doing? They arent a police officer and have no authority whatsoever. I would be upset to! He murdered a child and Zimmerman is guilty beyond a doubt and he just be punished to the fullest extent of the law!

Absolutely this was a hate crime. Anyone with more than two functional brain cells who has looked into this case can see that this is a clear cut case of a grown man who saw a black kid on HIS street, and decided to do something about it. There is no way that a grown, armed man in an SUV is going to be afraid of a scrawny kid who is running away. This monster needs to be arrested, tried, convicted, and executed.

Then, the police who have yet to do anything in this matter should all be arrested and charged with being accessories after the fact, dereliction of duty, obstruction of justice, and hate crimes of their own.

I don't know if this was a hate crime, but it really doesn't matter. He incorrectly decided Trayvon was a criminal, and he became one himself by killing him over it. 2nd deg murder, and what Sanford PD has done, tried to protect the criminal instead of the victim, is even worse. Anyone who doesn't go and arrest Zimmerman today should be arrested for corruption and aiding and abetting a fugitive from justice.

Calling this a "Hate Crime" detracts from the real hate crimes out there. The crimes where people are tortured and then killed. This is a crime, but it's not a hate crime.

It should be investigated as a hate crime, but only the courts can determine if it actually was a hate crime. We don't know that he was murdered because of his race at this point. But without a thorough 'hate crime' investigation how will we ever know? My intuition tells me it was race related, but that is an assessment only the courts and jury can make. There is also a question regarding hate crimes. Was he murdered because of his race, or was he stopped because of his race (profiling) whereas the murder occurred as a result of nonracially motived circumstances?

People need to do their research before jumping to conclusions. Witnesses said Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman beating him up. This is the very first news report of this incident.

"The guy on the bottom, who had a red sweater on, was yelling to me, 'Help! Help!' and I told him to stop, and I was calling 911," said the witness, who asked to be identified only by his first name, John.

John said he locked his patio door, ran upstairs and heard at least one gun shot.

"And then, when I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on the top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point."

If someone threatened me with a gun and started approaching and interrogating me, I would jump on him and attack him to save my life. Florida has a "stand your ground law" in case you haven't noticed, and it allowed Trayvon to be within his rights to respond if Zimmerman acted aggressively to him or displayed a weapon.

This report also got some of the facts wrong, the point is that we don't know exactly what happened. But we do know that Zimmerman was following Martin (he admitted it), we do know that Martin was unarmed and that he is dead of a gun shot wound inflicted by Zimmerman and we do know that he was killed in a public place. An aggressor cannot claim self defense, what ever happened Zimmerman was the aggressor in following Martin and again in using a gun...if Zimmerman has a defense it needs to be presented to a JURY, AFTER he is ARRESTED.

This is definitely a crime. In addition, race is involved!!! However, I don't believe the written law is the issue here but the loose interpretation of the law by the police and Zimmerman. Don't take away law abiding citizens rights to defend themselves when someone is trying to harm them. This is America, we have the right to protect ourselves at all times. IT IS CLEAR IN THIS CASE, ZIMMERMAN WAS NOT DEFENDING HIMSELF!!!

Speaking as a white Southerner, I think we're afraid of people who don't look like we do. I don't think that's an attitude limited to the South though. When we lived in Washington state people were leery of our Texas accents. When we lived in Louisiana, Georgia, and South Carolina we were accepted with no questions asked. When we attened a Mass given in Spanish in Texas no one in the congregation sat on the row with us. We were the only non-Hispanics in the church that day for that Mass. I grew up around other white people and didn't have Hispanic or Black friends. I don't think Zimmerman is a victim of his upbringing though–I think he's paranoid and watches too many news stories in which the perpetrators are young Black men wearing hoodies!

I am confused about a residents defense of Zimmerman. He feels that all the young teen needed to do was state what his business was in the area. The resident similar to Zimmerman forgets that Zimmerman is not an authority figure. Further, his vehicle that he was following Martin with was not official or marked in any way, why would one think to comply with a stranger in a car. Plus, Zimmerman never identified himself as to why he was making such inquiries. Zimmerman was clearly the aggressor. I'm not even sure how this can possibly be misconstrued? The police department has a lot to answer for and why another day has passed and Zimmerman is walking free is beyond me.

Hate Crime possibly. How much authority do the block watch captain have. I dont know any block watch captains that can gun down an unarmed male and NOT be formally question or detained. The hate is on the side of Florida police. i believe they were slow on this case and lackadaisical in their pursuit because it was a black youth. As much as people hate to admit America is still racist, it still is. No white honor student male can be gunned down and nothing happen. The fact is the police were dragging this out because as well all no the longer it takes the harder it is to get credible witnesses and that is what this case needs to be won

i think this is definitely a hate crime. I cannot imagine the feelings of these parents. You do everythimg to safeguard your child and he's shot down in the streets like a dog because of the color of his skin. This case raises the obvious issues, but RACIAL PROFILING is at the center of it. Racial profiling is common for those who argue it doesnt exist. Its not only hurtful or discriminatory, but can lead to dire events, such as incarceration and in this case, death. My son, half Latino and my husband, have been profiled so many times. The most ridiculous was when the state trooper talked to him as if he didnt understand English and made comments suggesting he had stolen the car. My son was an honor student, two miles away from his school.

So if someone is to confront you with a weapon and threaten to shoot you after following you and getting out of a car, you wouldn't fight back. The boy was walking home. If Zimmerman didn't leave his vehicle, he would not have any bumps and bruises and Trayvon would still be alive today.

From what I have read on Florida gun law . . .
    1. I should EXPECT to be arrested if I use a gun to protect my life. This did not happen in Sanford.
    2. "Stand Your Ground." is the LAST Resort if you can not retreat or need to stand your ground to protect your life or home. "Stand Your Ground" is being completely mis-represented. "Stand Your Ground" has NOTHING to do with an armed adult stalking someone from a motor vehicle then, exiting the vehicle to provoke a confrontation with an unarmed minor. I'm no lawyer but It seems to be a clear cut case of a hate crime and an execution.
    3. "Stand Your Ground" occurred INSIDE the automobile. . . . once Zimmerman exited the vehicle, he gave up his right to stand his ground and the stand your ground transferred to the teen who was shot. The TEEN had the right to stand his ground because he was not doing anything illegal.

This is such a sad tragedy no matter what way you look at it. A life was lost whether George is innocent or not. Whether this was racial or not, people do not realize the cause and effect it that sparks many other things. It is also sad to know that ignorant people like Mr Taffee- one of the neighbors is still racila profiling. In his interview with Vinnie Politan he refrenced that in 2006 the community was predominately white. His words because of the bad economy has caused the neighborhhod to now have a mixture of all races equally. It is so hard for some people to actually belive that there are people of all races that can afford what once what only afforded to the white race. No one race is superior to another no matter what is percieved for some to think. God made all people and his blessings rain on all-no matter what the devil triies to stir up. Racism is of the devil. On the other hand, this whole thing, this terribly tragic incident, may have been set up by the powers that be -
An Association with ties to gangsters in politics hires a man as Neighborhood Watchman. They purposely get someone who is not the most disciplined and somewhat over-zealous, which is determined from his past experiences. They hire him but give him "no formal training" on how to present and confront guests or suspects and how to "obey" dispatchers when he calls 911. Okay, the topper is they do not give him a uniform to wear in order to set the stage for the eventual tragedy that happened that night.
Now all America is watching this case very closely. While this is very tragic and I'm so sorry for the Martin's loss of their beautiful young son, our govt and media work together I believe to control the masses to a large degree. This story is designed to keep our attention glued to the Martin case while Obama is creating thousands of Executive Orders to take away our liberties even as I write this.
Here's the kicker, a win-win for Obama. Govt lets the case build up 'til it's about to explode, then Bama "comes to the rescue" and investigates and finds Zimmerman guilty of wreckless use of a firearm or something. All the black families are happy that Obama decided in Martin's favor and vote for Obama in 2012 presidential election. The end of scam.
Next scene: 2013, false flag attack on America; marshall law; civil unrest, riots, civil war, Revolution.

I read that Zimmerman was appointed Watchman for the neighborhood. Who appointed him? Was it the Association of all those Condominiums or something? If so, he should have been wearing a "special uniform shirt or jacket" which identifies him as a Neighborhood Watchman; also, a clearly visual "badge" and/or "name tag" should have been embroidered or pinned on his uniform shirt or jacket. I read he was wearing a "white t-shirt"; don't know if this is correct. But if it is so, then I must assume that the Association or whoever appointed this man as Watchman, is grossly negligent for the safety of the neighborhood citizens and guests because he was not wearing a uniform or special shirt or jacket that sent a clear signal he was "on duty as a guard or Watchman" for the neighborhood. So the Martin family should sue for $1Billion on those grounds alone.

Zimmerman was told by the 911dispatcher "we don't need you to follow" the man, which meant "do not follow". Zimmerman disobeyed and took it upon himself to "apprehend". Also, I did not read anywhere that Zimmerman signaled by voice to Martin that he was "the neighborhood watchman", and if this is so, then that would be cause for another law suit against Zimmerman and Association in have an untrained and undisciplined watchman on duty.

No one has an obligation to stop – talk to – or recognize the authority of a "neighborhood watchman" or even a uniformed "security guard" for that matter. These "faux cops" hold no authority over any other citizen. Their ONLY power is to call the real police unless they SPECIFICALLY have witnessed a crime – and then they can engage in a citizens arrest (just like anyone else). They cannot confront, question, apprehend, or impede anyone. This guard OBVIOUSLY exceeded his powers. He chased down a subject and confronted him. Uniform or not – he did not have that authority – much less the authority to pull a gun and shoot someone holding a bag of Skittles.

Clearly neighborhood watches need structure. Clearly the citizens who patrol should KNOW THEIR NEIGHBORS AND REGULAR GUESTS.Also, neighbors and guests ought to know the "watchmen" patroling. The irrational excuse that the man acted unwise/overzealous is because previous breakins were done by "blacks",as one of the neighbors in that community said. To men that statement alone shows how people only see color(racial profiling) and didn't pay attention(or didn't care to understand) the age, build, or other features of the robbers. That neighborhood watch should be dibanned in favor of a private ,trained, rational security co.

It is not mandatory to obey instructions given to you by a 911 operator. Many neighborhoods have watch programs, I don't think you can sue a group of volunteers because one of their members had a gun. This is a tragic event. He should be arrested, I cannot speak for what happened just before the shooting because I was not there.

" He is walking with his hand in his belt. He is a black male. These people always get away." The operator told him to stop following him. He didn't listen.. now that child is dead. I am a black male. Sometimes when I talk on the phone outside at night, I put my hand inside my waistband because its cold. If I was in that neighborhood I could've died that night.

Why cops not arresting to that person, when they do not have authority to judge if he is innocent or not. A kid is dead at the spot, and police should arrest the guy, and let court decide if he is right or not. Cops definitely biased in this case.

I think that it is a travesty that this young man Trayvon Martin lost his life for no reason but what is an even greater miscarriage of justice is the failure of the Sanford police department and the district attorney's office to properly investigate this homicide just because George Zimmerman said it was "self defense" my god the kid only had a bag of skittles and a soda pop i have always been a objective thinker, I am not the type of person to always cry racism with every situation, but in this instance our system of justice has not only failed Trayvon and his family but has failed society. For example, i personally though that OJ Simpson murdered his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman even though the leading detective Mark Fuhrman may have planted evidence, but the system still at least brought charges against OJ, and there was an investigation and trial the way the system is supposed to work even though he got off he was still due processed.

Anderson – the person you interviewed who spoke in defense of George Zimmerman's character stated something to the effect,"if only he (Trayvon) had answered (George) as to what he was doing..." – Why didn't you call him on that statement?! Did I miss something in the reporting of the story over the past few days that Trayvon was asked the question? I only heard George following Trayvon while talking to 911, neighbors when they called 911, Trayvon screaming and a gunshot. And, if Trayvon was asked and didn't responded "appropriately", is that justification?

Any person defending this guy is crazy I have read some of these comments about what some people did and got away with, but those people went to the court of law to decide there fate this man was not even arrested or charged with anything and the kid was staying in the gated community he was walking home from the store and approached by a stranger with no authority at all to question him and was shot dead after the 911 dispatcher told him not to follow him come on if this was anyone son you would want at least in investigation and arrested, and him to be tried for this crime.

"Hate Crime" is a nonsense, unfairly implemented law that should go the way of the Dinosaur.

What is worse is when websites like this immediately take a side and assume the incident went as they are portraying it. I say, let the law do its job for once without clouding the atmosphere with nonsense.

CNN, you are using this to drive your agenda. If you actually worked black on black crimes as hard as you do these incidents everyone would be a lot better off.

It SOUNDS to me like this kid was innocent. Why is that neighborhood so threatened that it would come to this? How did that happen? Excessive crime? From .. who? What put this neighborhood into the position that an armed neighborhood watch person, not a cop, would have the power to kill someone? Answer THOSE questions instead of trying to drive the story in the direction you desire.

Is this a HATE CRIME by the true definition of hate crime? not sure but the fact remains that an unarmed teenager who was on his way home or to the residence he was staying was approached and accosted by an adult with a gun for no reason what so ever and eventually shot to death. There was absolutely no threat to this adult or to his home, property or body. He stalked stalked this frighten young man who cried for help. What kind of threat was this kid who had candy and soft drink in his hand to an adult with a gun? Would this has happen if this kid was white? I think not. This family who has lost their loved one and the community in general needs justice. @ Anna you are 100% correct in your assessment.

Some of these insensitive comments remind me of the comments mailed to Look magazine after killers of Emmett Till admitted that they murdered him. This was in 1955 and the killers were never put in prison. This case is quite similar to that thus far. Some people on this blog suggest that the killer was correct. I am disgusted and I cannot bear the thought that, in 2012, there are those who think that this is not a murder motivated by racial biases.

It appears the problem is not only with the hateful idiot that shot him but with the police department. The child is lying in the street dead and the police gives him a drug test. The shooter was not tested. According to today's news, the shooter has a record of domestic violence as well as being arrested for for pulling his gun on someone else several years ago. The police chief needs to be fired for not investigating the shooter and simply doing nothing. He seems to be an idiot and needs to be replaced.

Dawn Jackson, Jacksonville, FL.– FL. Federal Investigators and the U. S. Justice Department should have no trouble declaring the Trayvon Martin shooting a hate crime. In his own words, George Zimmerman indicts himself, “These a**holes, they always get away.” Investigators and the attorneys on both sides owe it to the Martin family to ask Zimmerman: Who are “they”? What attributes do “they” have? For example, what does “they” look like. Trayvon Martin was never an innocent young man in Zimmerman’s eyes. He was profiled by Zimmerman and determined to be a member of the group “they”, and Zimmerman hated Trayvon because “…they always get away.”

In live in Washington D.C., and every morning, literally every morning, the news reports at least one and oftentimes more than one killing of a young black man or woman by another black. Either in Southwest D.C. or Prince George's County. And in all my life, I have never, never once seen this Congresswoman Corrine Brown on t.v. condeming this or even calling for an investigation. In fact, I never heard of her before she stuck her nose in this "hate crime." Is the murder of blacks okay if it is done by other blacks? Apparently so, Ms. Congresswoman. Total self serving politician. Just trying to whip up racial hysteria for her own political benefit. What a piece of garbage. And by the way, her wig is a hate crime.

What you, and many other bigots commenting here fail to realize is, those "BUT BLACKS KILL BLACKS EVERYDAY HUH HUH?" idiotic comments completely lacks insight to what actually happened. The icidents you mention, are dealth with the LEGAL system and the LAW ENFORCEMENT taking action.

This is different. A child has been killed, and the law enforcement neglected to act properly.
The cases you mention were delat with arrests. THEY ARE NOTHE SAME THING. How you people fail to see this difference baffles me. Do you have even a shred of intelligence in you?

Take race out of is still hate
Mr. Zimmerman had contempt for this young man. He felt that Travon should not have the free will to walk in his neighborhood. He placed this young man in a category of people, that he obviously did not like...when he place Travon in that category, he place a value of less than worthy to walk in his neighborhood. Mr Zimmerman devalued the life of Travon Martin, and then killed him. That, my fellow countrymen constitutes a hate crime.

All those husbands and wives trying to hire hit men to kill their spouses on dateline and 20/20 should hire a hit man under this scenario after planning a trip to florida first.

Of course no one likes hearing of anyone dying, no matter their age or race. As of now, I don't see this as a hate crime. How many hate crimes start with the "agressor" calling 911? I am not sticking up for him cause we don't know exactly what happened. He is part of the neighborhood watch and on alert due to numerous recent break-ins in the community. The media keeps saying "black kid killed in gated community" yes it's gated but nearly half the residents are black and you can buy a nearly brand new 1600 sq ft house for less than $100K. A witness Mary Cutcher has now changed her original story that supported Zimmerman's self defense claim. (and original witnesses said Zimmerman was the one getting beat up and screaming help) Also, this case has been in the media for almost a month and we just now learned that he was on the phone with his girlfriend during all this? Again, I am not taking anyone's side and simply want to know the truth. With one of the only true witnesses dead, we may never know. The media isn't bringing awareness they are creating a firestorm of hate and finger pointing. I am sure Zimmerman's family has a cute baby picture of him but I have yet to see it. It's a sad situation regardless. Did Zimmerman's actions cause this? Yes, but I don't see this as a hate crime with the current amount of "evidence"

I have no doubt this is a hate crime. The 911 tape is clear. Zimmerman used foul language in talking with the police: "a**hole" (they always get away) and "S***." He already sounded irritated to me. He ignored police advice and pursued this unarmed kid anyway. I closed my eyes and carefully LISTENED to the tape. I definitely heard him mutter "f***ing c**n" under his breath as he was already walking after Treyvon. Later 911 tapes, I hear what sounds like a child screaming for help, and why wouldn't he??? This guy is older, bigger AND... he has a gun! The only mystery to me is WHYIS THIS KILLER NOT IN JAIL AWAITING TRIAL???

We find that the boy was on the phone with his girlfriend who was a witness.
    She indicated:
Boy went to buy candy from store. Boy sees man stalking him. Girlfriend says to run. Boy says he will not run.
Man confronts boy, boy crys for help, boy get killed. Boy has no weapon and only has candy. Sounds like pre-meditated murder to me.

If this is a hate crime, why does everyone seem to think that Zimmerman only hated "Black People?" Maybe he hated white kids too? This child should not be dead, period. However, trying to say that their is no racism towards white people or hate crimes toward white people is so ignorant. Racism exists in all races. Zimmerman was Hispanic, why are you assuming he only "hated" black people. In addition, maybe we should stop with all the what ifs and focus on what happened. A child was murdered, that is tragic. It would not be any less tragic if he was white, hispanic or asian. The face of our nation is changing, many of us have mixed backgrounds and families. I do not think that only black people are the targets of racism. The important thing in this case is to find justice for the family of this child, no matter what color he happened to be.

The man had already contacted the authorities, so lets just assume that the child was 'up to no good' far could he have gotten or what could he have done considering he was being watched and the police were already en route. This man was completely and utterly wrong and the fact that he killed this child can not be justified any any way. (Shaking my head at the absurdity of condoning his actions)

Couldn't make the grade in college, so he puts on a gun and patrols the area, pretending to be a policeman, playing a game of policeman, calling 911 repeatedly because he thinks he is a hotshot policeman. Trayvon's mom and dad raised him well. It appears zimmermans parents failed to raise him well. The photo of zimmerman, his mug shot, speaks for itself. Where is zimmerman's weapon? Why hasn't someone taken it from him? He is still out there playing policeman. The next person he kills could be you.

Airborne82, your comments are just like Zimmerman's actions... Hateful, hurtful and racist! Trayvon Benjamin Martin was an A/B student, respected his parents, teachers and elders, was a high school junior who had NEVER been suspended or expelled from school, NEVER been in trouble with the police or ANY law enforcement agency. He loved his siblings and was a very typical teenager who loved sports, had a steady girlfriend as was being raised by his father to be an upstanding citizen and man.

You say that, "The man was protecting not only his home, but the homes of others living in the same area...VOLUNTEERING non the less....Police have their hands full already, and I feel we need brave men and women who are sick and tired of allowing a lifetime of hardwork to be ruined by low life degenerants such as these." Well, sir, Trayvon was breaking into the home of George Zimmerman, he was walking home from the store, IS THAT A CRIME? He was profiled by Zimmerman because of Trayvon was Black. Just be honest with yourself... You know had Trayvon been TRAVIS, a white boy, Zimmerman would've given him a second look, but he locked his eyes on his prey, and preyed on him until he took his life with one shot to the chest. What lessons had Trayvon parents not taught him actually??? Hmmm.. not to run from strangers? Not to scream for help if your life is being threatened, afterall Zimmerman was the person with the gun. What lessons of right and wrong did his parents not teach him??? Trayvon is a citizen of this United States of America just as you are. When he was born into the country he was afforded the same rights of LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINSS. He falls under the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights as you do. I am so disheartened by the comments that have been stated about a 17 year old that is no longer with us to defend what others are saying... What I do know is Trayvon begged, pleaded and screamed for his life and George Michael Zimmerman silenced his voice, but he will not, I repeat WILL NOT silence the voice of the thousands that believe in JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON!

ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME????? Your comment alone causes me to believe that you yourself are a LOW LIFE DEGENERANT. Zimmerman's parent obviously didn't raise him right if he's judging every people out of his own fear. He was nothing but a punk for using a gun on someone half his size who was also UNARMED! I pray to GOD you don't have children or else our future is more doomed than it will ever be with your ignorant way of thinking. And FYI, it IS a hate crime because he said a racial slur that can clearly be heard on the tape (maybe you need to listen again). RIP TRAYVON MARTIN

I have an 81 year old mother who lives alone and I very much appreciate that there are neighborhood watch volunteers who keep an eye on her. This kind of story will probably make volunteers think twice about getting involved. It would be easier to look the other way than to get involved and risk being vilified by the media and all these people who weren't there and don't know what happened. George Zimm may have made a terrible mistake but we don't know all the facts and he and his family have gotten death threats and their home address posted on CNN. I think CNN wants to see him beheaded Taliban style. The media is whipping up a frenzy of hate. Even if he screwed up, he's only 28 years old – born in the 1980's, but eveyone somehow thinks dumping the entire histroy of black's problems on this one guy will solve their problems. It won't. Blacks will keep on killing blacks and commiting crimes and living F**ked up lives. Crucifying Zimmermann won't save you from yourselves.

Apparently you are convicting this kid of a crime where theres no evidence of such. This is a classic case of profiling and stereotyping. The kid had a bag of skittles as his so called weapon. What type of deadly physical force is that. This Zimmerman is a want to be cop. The witnesses say he was on top of the boy straddling him. If the bullet isn't in his body it's probably in the ground underneath where he was killed. This is cold blooded murder! We all have to be responsible for our actions, this Zimmerman should be held responsible for his actions. Let a jury of twelve of his peers make that decision. Floridas' "Stand your ground" has a serious problem. Obviously! But really doesn't apply here.
Put yourself in the shoes of the mother and father and then think about how you would feel, after your son was gunned
down like he was nothing in this world we have to live in. You would probably be lookinng for Zimmerman yourself.

You said the man was protecting his home and the home of others. Get a grip. This was a scene out of a kkk movie. I am a parent who lost his child to the hands of someone white. Only dif was she was driving a van. But what happen after was the same to a t. No charges, no real investigation. I had to do that all myself. What I found was shocking. non the less shes free right now. rather black or white. It is a shame to lose a life so young. even worse if its your child. @airborne82 either you have no children or you have no heart. That child is dead and you want to commend what was done. What if it was you child? and to think you have nerve to say how someone raised their child. Wake up, there's no room for people like you on earth. Its because of people like you that this families heart is broken. Point, ur a jerk! and this death was pointless. I hope they find a way to charge that murderer the way he deserves. Since you think he's correct why don't see if you can share a cell with him.

The man was protecting not only his home, but the homes of others living in the same area...VOLUNTEERING non the less....Police have their hands full already, and I feel we need brave men and women who are sick and tired of allowing a lifetime of hardwork to be ruined by low life degenerants such as these....Point being, the kid probably would still be alive if Mom and Dad would have done a better job raising the boy and teaching life lessons of right and wrong...I would have done the same thing !!! NOT A HATE CRIME ISSUE....JUST A RIGHT FROM WRONG ISSUE !!!

WTH is wrong with you??? You are the obvious degenerate here??? Trayvon's behavior is not in question here you idiot!!!! And it is a hate criame when you here on the 9-1-1 tape he calls Trayvon a f******c**n!!! You people just don't want to face TRUTH and FACTS but it doesn't matter what you say. The person who actually wrote the Stand Your Ground Law, Republican Dennis Baxley, says, Quite simply the castle doctrine is a good law which now protects individuals in a majority of states. However, the castle doctrine does not provide protection to individuals who seek to pursue and confront others, as is allegedly the case in the Trayvon Martin tragedy in Sanford. The information that has been publicly reported concerning Trayvon Martin's death indicates that the castle doctrine may not be applicable to justify the actions of the attacker, Mr. Zimmerman. Zimmerman is toast!!!

      Earth to Airborne82....
Stop...take a few seconds and read what you wrote and ask yourself if you would feel the same way if your brother was killed in the same manner-or any of your family members for that matter.
Now....look at yourself in the mirror and think deeply..if your answer to this question is still Yes....I'll have nothing else to say to you.

I wonder if youl would have the same opinion if one of your children was gunned down, from going to the store to buy candy on there way home.

Oh, you would have done the same thing Airborne? Then you would be a murderer too. Don't be an idiot. Read the facts. This kid was walking back to HIS house. Zimmerman called the police who told him to stop following him. But despite the fact police were on the way Zimmerman decided on his own to PURSUE this child. There is nothing self defense about it. He was looking for a fight. He was looking for a reason to use his gun against a black kid with a hoodie. Sorry you want to go back to the days of vigilante murder, lynchings, castration and rape but we're not going back there. Because being black does not equal criminal, because being black does not equal probably cause, because being black does not equal threat, because black men and boys are human beings, because we deserve EQUAL PROTECTION under the law, because our ancestors shed enough blood, sign the petition for Trayvon, help us reach 1 MILLION signatures. Thank God there are more people with sense in this world than you Airborne.

So you would have stalked an unarmed teenager after the police clearly told you not to? Where is your compassion for this family. A mother and father has lost their child. Yes it is clearly a matter of right and wrong. A kid is dead and his admitted killer is free and that is wrong! This kid's upbringing had nothing to do with it. Think about that the next time one of your young loved ones goes out of the house for something as simple as candy.

Airborne, if you feel threatened that a child went to a store to buy candies and tea, and walking down the street, you have serious issues. Or insane. Like this Zimmerman fella.
