Pastor Rick Warren: 'Cultural Christianity is dying,' but 'true Christianity is not'
Pastor Rick Warren, author of "The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?," joins "Starting Point" on Thursday to discuss his updated bestseller and how the culture of religion in the United States has changed in the past ten years.
"The audience has changed," Pastor Warren explains. "A girl who was 12 years old when the book came out is now 22. She needs to know her purpose. I really refocused the book for people in their 20s and 30s who may have ignored it 10 years ago."
He also adds that new technology encouraged him to update his bestseller, which now offers 30-minute audio teachings in each chapter.
In addition to his updated book, Pastor Warren discusses how Christianity has changed in the United States since his bestseller was first published. "Cultural Christianity is dying," he says. "True Christianity is not." He adds that while fewer people today may identify with the term "Protestant," it does not mean that the Church is dying.

Unfortunately, the Hope and Change he is bringing us is less of a Christian culture and more of a downfall of America type of thing–saddled with "get what you can" and "gay marriage" culture where homosexuals pay less in taxes. It is not evolution, as Obama sees it, it is more of a destruction of a Nation from within–that's what we're facing. Complete utter bankruptcy and self-implosion from within.

It's the empty space in your head that's imploding, Martin–the space where a mature intellect ought to be. To be more clear, though: that space where your intelligence should be is not in fact empty. It is filled with hatred and contempt; with the idolatry of a nationalistic heresy; with feelings that you use to drown and obscure the self-contempt generated by your sense of worthlessness and irrelevance. Those feelings are the only factually valid aspects of your psyche. Tragically, there is almost no chance at all that you will ever embrace that kernel of legitimacy within you and become a valid person. You are in that sense eternally damned, and you will probably never be able to join the ranks of decent humanity.
It's great that real Christianity is being seperated from the posers. Just because you go to a church doens't make you a Christian, as much as going to Burger King makes you Whopper. One must received Christ as Savior and Lord, and then live like that's true.
I think there may be some truth to the headline, though he really doesn't explain it. The stigma for not being a Christian has slowly been eroding, so people don't feel like they have to be Christian to be part of society.
