2012 CNN Hero of the Year Pushpa Basnet says everyone 'should give back to society – not just in terms of money, but in terms of your time and skill'

Pushpa Basnet was shocked to learn that many children in Nepal had no choice but to live with their incarcerated parents behind bars. So Basnet who only in her 20's felt inspired to start a day care program for many of the children and opened a home in Kathmandu where dozens of them can live a more normal life. This morning, Basnet joins “Starting Point” to discuss what it was like to be chosen as the 2012 “CNN Hero of The Year."

Basnet says winning for her was “a big thing,” because she could not believe what was “happening around her.” The 29-year-old adds that now her “dream was coming to a reality.”

The top ten heroes are all awarded $50,000 and the winner receives an additional $250,000. Basnet says she wants to use her money to “make her butterfly home” because currently they “are staying in a rented place.”

Basnet says she “wants all people to know… how fortunate we all are and we should give back to society – not just in terms of money, but in terms of your time and skill.”

I voted for her. As long as the world as young women and men like her, I still have hope for this world.
