Scholars Academy is one of 56 schools in New York still closed because of damage from Hurricane Sandy. Poppy Harlow surveys the school and comes to “Starting Point” to describe how people can help the school and its students like eighth-grader Ryan Panetta rebuild after the storm.
“You can still smell the destruction Sandy wrought at Scholar's Academy,” Harlow says. When Sandy hit, the water gushed into the school that is wedged between the Atlantic ocean, Jamaica Bay and a sewage treatment plant. “Surveillance cameras captured the ocean pouring into the basement and climbing the stairs of Principal Brian O’Connell's beloved school.” But he and the students are dedicted to rebuild.
“We keep saying scholar strong and Rockaway resilient,” O’Connell says. “They sound cliché, we are using them so much, but it’s just reality.”

When did CNN turn right wing? I thought I was on Fox a few minutes ago when that blonde witch attacked Governor Crist. Soledad also attacked him; that was a surprise. We were having coffee and watching CNN this morning at Mac Donald's and most of us wanted to tell that blonde to go back to Fox where she belongs. Any wonder why CNN's ratings are so poor. The answer to low ratings is not to hire the right wingers from Fox Faux News. We changed the channel to a local news show. No more CNN for us this morning. By the way, when an 83 year old gentleman changed the channel, everybody in the place applauded for minutes. Nobody could stand that blonde with the wild eyes who attacked Gov. Crist for changing to a Democrat. And Soledad, you had fans here today who said you have become obnoxious and mean spriited. I agree with them.
