It's been two weeks since a gunman broke into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 26 teachers and students. The nation continues to mourn, and since then, there's been an ongoing debate about how to prevent another tragedy from happening. Some have even suggested arming teachers to combat violence in schools.
Teachers in West Valley City, Utah are taking this suggestion seriously. They were being taught how to properly handle a gun, among other lessons, in a six-hour seminar yesterday. The course was free and made possible by Clark Aposhian. Aposhian is the Chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council and has trained teachers how to use guns in Utah in the past. Kasey Hansen is a special education teacher who trained to use a gun at Clark's class. They both join “Starting Point” live from Salt Lake City with more.
Wow... I think I might move to Utah to teach. I have spoken with many of my parents here in Maryland about it and they said they would feel safer knowing a trained professional was carrying at the school.
An idea that is long overdue. It is time for the people to take back control of their own lives, and to take responsibility for their own safety. NO ONE ELSE can be depended upon to do this!
Have the brains been sucked out of this nation ? I am appalled at the Neanderthals who think more guns in the class room will solve the violence fantiasies of America . Columbine had armed guards nearby.... they didnt stop the criminals. Va. Tech had armed guards on campus.... they couldnt get tthere in time. More guns means more shooting and more chaos and more insanity. Wake up, America !! Australia and UK banned assault weapons after rashes of mass shootings and their gun death rate plummeted. COMMON SENSE. The NRA spouts lies and more fake statistics. Wake UP , America !! Use your brains.
This is why Wayne LaPierre's speech last Friday so disappointed me.
What if he had walked to the podium expressed his true anger and frustrations about the Newtown tragedy and said. "Folks we can fix this. NRA members are ex- and current military, police, ATF, etc. and the one thing we know is security. We need to work to secure or most treasured, our children."
No sidebars into video games, movies, music, etc. Just start claiming of a role that the NRA would be uniquely qualified to handle.
Many of my family members fit this bill and are NRA members. I am not because the folks at the NRA miss these types of moments and only focus on the business end of the deal. You would think the folks at the NRA would know something about securing the higher ground.
Arming the teachers is one of the few truly constructive ideas in the entire national discussion.
What absolutely need to be abolished are the "gun free zones" which have been attracting deranged killers with such consistency.
