A new diet book is climbing to the top of the New York Times best-seller list.
"The Fast Diet," also known as the "5-2" diet, allows 'normal' eating for five days out of the week, then fasting for two non-consecutive days a week.
The author of the book is UK medical journalist Dr. Michael Mosley, who discovered the diet while working on a TV science show as a human guinea pig.
The health, diet and exercise-focused science series comes to PBS's "Exploration Wednesdays," premiering April 3rd at 10pm Eastern.
See more from Soledad O'Brien's interview with Dr. Michael Mosley, where he explains the method and science behind "The Fast Diet" in the video above.
I practiced a different FAST diet, very successfully, for 13 years. So I know a lot about FAST dieting. I fasted 3 days a week, but every other day during Monday to Friday. Fasting two consecutive days is WRONG! That really will do a 'job' on you and you will not be able to sustain it. I fasted Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You also need, with no 'ifs and buts' a LOT of exercise on the days you fast to provide your body with the hormones and chemicals NEEDED to combat the hunger pangs. This 2:5 diet is not even a fad. It is dangerous. My diet works. It is fasting in moderation with exercise. I have written about it. It is on the Web with the schedule I kept. You should talk to ME about FAST dieting. All the best. Thanks. Cheers, Anura Guruge, NH Life.
