Ringling Bros. trainer: Circus elephant improves after drive-by shooting

It sounds like a plot point from some comedy farce: A circus elephant wounded in a drive-by shooting.

But it actually happened in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Carol the elephant is expected to make a full recovery. She's part of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus. The bullet hit the 39-year-old Asian elephant in the neck between her shoulder and ear.

Ringling Bros. has moved Carol to its circus farm in Springfield, Missouri to complete her recovery. Trainer Catherine Carden appeared on "Starting Point" this morning, with Carol in the background, to discuss new security measures the circus is taking after the incident and the latest in Carol's recovery.

What kind of news person finds this wanton cruelty in any way comedic? What an attitude!

It is obvious that our precious 2nd amendment rights trumps all others, such as the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Ringling has a horrible abuse record on their treatment of elephant. Been cited numerous times. Yes, they did win a nice sum of money from an old court case, but there are still documents of abuse. While they are not the only ones, I always feel sorry for elephants in captivity. Such wonderful intelligent creatures, they do not do well and die much sooner than their free roaming counterparts.

You know... when Elephants start getting shot during drive-bys, there just might be too many guns out there. But maybe not. This could just be very normal behavior in a very civilized country.

Hopefully, this will give her a break from the cruelty she endures daily from the circus!

Perhaps everyone involved should visit the web site of the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennesse. Thats where this poor elephant and all others held captive in circus belong

The best thing that Tupelo residents could do now...is find the bastard that shot at this elephant and bring him to justice. Then, you could hold your heads high again and be proud of your City.

Perhaps the elephant should've been brought to the N. Mississippi Medical Center...

The human race is not humane and the earth will tire of this cancerous creation to rest as it did the dinosaurs.

Good morning! I live in Tupelo, MS and would like the viewers to know that being infamous for shooting a circus elephant does NOT represent who we are! CNN does not pick up on the FACT that North MIssissippi Medical Center, located in and around Tupelo recently received the nation's HIGHEST quality award from the President of the United States for healthcare – not once, but for the SECOND time and they are the ONLY healthcare system in this nation to do so! I am so proud to receive my healthcare here and you would be too!

I am glad that you have qaulity health care in Tupelo. Soon the rest of the nation will have it as well when the Affordable Health Care Act kicks in. But your comment doesn't excuse what happened to the elephant. Sounds like Carol was in the wrong place, but a drive-by shooting? Deplorable. It seems that with so many guns in our homes and on our streets, it is not safe anywhere. Not even watching the circus.
