Brenda Chapman Co-Director of Disney's Animated film Brave signs petitions against main character Merida's makeover

Brenda Chapman is the academy award winner, creator and co-director for Disney's global box office animated hit film Brave.

Recently Disney announced that Brave's main character Merida would be made into Disney's 11th princess. Disney gave Merida a makeover that some claim is too sexy for the character that is known for being the antithesis of the stereotypical Disney Princess.

Chapman says she was 'a bit appalled' when she saw what Disney did to Merida. She feels that Disney 'has completely lost sight of the character in this new design."

Chapman has signed an online petition that has already received over 120,000 signatures.

I found nothing wrong with the original character. I have a huge problem with this make over. It is insulting disneys originality for the Disney film. It is insulting the original artist and everyone that had a hand in processing this animated feature. I can not believe a grand company such as disney is getting just as immoral and letting images dictate the roles of what is princess appropirate. The character should remain the same as in the animated film. I would be appaled and highly disgraced as an artist with a company taking over my work and making it into a social media mess. I would be publicly embarassed and publicly humiliated. I want to take a stand for artists everywhere. I hope disney does not make a change to such a great character. It will mess up my collection that I already have of the main design with the original design of the character. And I would hope Disney would remain in its originality and respect for its artists and characters as it has for over 100 years.

Any outrage people feel should be tempered by the fact that the image on the petition site has been altered to make the Disney Princess Merida appear thinner, by about 15%. As a Disney licensee, I have access to the original art and could tell something was off at first glance. Not sure where they got that comparison image but it seems deliberately misleading.

In any event, this is simply an aesthetic change to make Merida blend in with her royal counterparts. There are alternate poses of her without the sparkles and with her trademark bow. This is much ado about nothing.
